That's W.I.N.E. for Linux. It's an incomplete, buggy and often useless attempt at an API Layer for Windows programs to run on Linux.
It's a big project, but it's made by a community of people, so it wouldn't be up to the standards of professional companies......would it?
I was recently exposed to the joy of Citrix MetaFrame. By 'exposed to' I obviously mean 'horrified by' and by 'joy' I mean 'hours of mind numbing frustration'.
First off, Universal Printer Drivers. Who made up this Magic? I mean, I've been looking for Universal ANYTHING drivers for years and no one's made one yet. Why? Because one size doesn't fit all. Secondly, after doing some research I found that the UPD for Citrix is actually a HP Color LaserJet 4500 driver...so why rename it? I'm sure it will work for a lot of HP Color Laserjets, and even in a crippled way for other printers. But at least tell me what I'm getting!
Another gripe: Their 'solutions' to 'common problems' 90% of the time involve registry hacking. I'm not entirely certain, but user friendly wasn't what was last used to describe regedit. Now, I know it's not your typical end user kind of program, but I get a bit touchy when I start to fuck around with the registry. I don't like doing it and I shouldn't have to.
Anyway, my days over. Ciao.
